'Giraffe' Sightings Reported in Zoo's Neighborhood

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has been blessed with the birth of two baby giraffes in recent months. Now even more giraffes seem to be popping up all over the Zoo’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood.

Warm Up at The RainForest This Week

Well, it looks like Cleveland's snowy weather is back with us again. So the timing is perfect to tell you some new details about our Sweet 16 celebration for The RainForest.

Zoo Makes 'Best of Cleveland' List

Good news, Zoo fans: The readers of Cleveland Scene recently named Cleveland Metroparks Zoo as the "Best Place to Take Kids." Of course, we appreciate being so prominently featured in Scene's "Best of Cleveland 2008" poll, but we're hoping that next year we can move up in the rankings as the "Best Place to Take Anyone -- Regardless of Age." Wish us luck!

Zoo Crew Teens Helping Out in the Neighborhood

I recently heard that some of the Zoo Crew teen volunteers here at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo did a lot of work to help clean-and-green a Cleveland neighborhood. We asked Zoo Crew member Danny DiMarino, a sophomore at Holy Name High School in Parma Heights, to share his experience doing the "Naturehood" project with our Roar Report readers.

Do the Zoo for Less!

Don't forget: Starting tomorrow, November 1, your admission to Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is discounted to the winter rates of just $7 per person, $5 for kids ages 2 to 11 and free for children under 2 and Zoo members. The discounted rates remain in effect through March 31, 2009. There's plenty of Zoo to do all winter long -- and you'll save some money doing it!

Final Saturday of Boo at the Zoo

The final Boo at the Zoo photo gallery is from Saturday, October 25. It was another sell-out crowd here at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and the weather was perfect once again. Check out the happy Boo-ers from Saturday, including our tigers and a few Storm Troopers from Star Wars.

Boo Week Two: Photo Gallery from Thursday Night

I've got a fresh batch of photos for all you Boo-ers out there. The second week of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's Boo at the Zoo started with another great rain-free evening. Thanks to everyone who posed for pictures -- we're loving your costumes, especially when the whole family is dressed up. Check y'all out - -even yours truly managed to get my picture taken this time!

Boo by the Numbers

Ever wonder how many pumpkins we have around the Zoo or how much candy is handed out? Well here are the answers to your burning Boo questions!

Sunday Night Boo at the Zoo Photo Gallery

The first week of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's Halloween event, Boo at the Zoo, ended with three sell-out evenings and lots of happy faces (from what I could tell). Did I catch you in your costume on Sunday, October 19? Check out our latest Boo photo gallery.

A Wolf Named Gage!

Thanks to everyone who voted to name our new male grey wolf. We received a total of 1579 votes (702 online votes and 877 paper ballots). The winning name was "Gage" and the final tallies for each name were as follows:

  • Gage: 712
  • Joshua: 357
  • Merrill: 261
  • Garth: 247

We also had creative write-ins and online comments that we wanted to share with our readers: Bambi, Snowball, Spyke, Kangaroo, Obama, Brian, Des, Elijah, Mishka, George, Wolfie, Spiritwolf, Maddox, Lobo ("The Wolf That Changed America"), Apollo, Reggie (meaning "king") and Duran (after English pop rock band "Duran Duran" who had a hit with "Hungry Like the Wolf").

Thanks again to everyone who voted! Make sure you visit Wolf Lodge in the coming months because we've been told Gage is getting up close and personal with Zoo visitors at the window.
